First, what exactly is positioning?
Positioning is the space we own in the mind of our consumer — how they perceive us, describe us, compare us. In simple terms, it's the conclusion they've reached about who we are, who we're for and what we sell.
They reach that conclusion from every interaction they have with us, good and bad — every word they read, every visual they see. This makes those words and visuals paramount. We have to know exactly how to describe our product, which means knowing exactly what frustration or need we speak to (not benefit or feature), and why we're right for them.
The kicker? We have to know this objectively. Rose-coloured glasses off, emotional attachment to the brand left at the door, looking at it through the eyes of the end consumer. For founder-led brands, that's the hardest part.

How do I know I have a positioning problem?
A positioning problem is a disconnect between how you want to be seen and what the market sees. It usually shows up on the surface looking like one of these marketing and team problems:
Now, your turn.
Let’s do a little health check. Do you know your positioning statement? We like to follow this format in extremely specific detail:
What it is →
Who it's for → What THEY GET →
NOT:
→ Marketing strategists
→ For brands
→ So they can grow.
BE BETTER:
→ A brand advisory and strategy consultancy, run by relaxed, no bullshit, ex-scale-up DTC operators
→ For bold digital brands stuck in brand-limbo
→ So they can get brutally clear on their product truth, spot where growth actually lives, and nail their positioning to back every decision they make.
01
What are you? (your category + specific USPs or brand values)
02
What makes you different? (one ownable differentiator)
03
Who are you for? (not demographics: psychographics)
04
What do they get? (the feeling, not just the feature)
Wait, can you explain it again?
Your positioning isn't your tagline. It's an internal business description that guides every decision you make afterwards: price, product, distribution, team, strategy. Each part does a job:
What you are
Tell the world what you sell in a very specific way.
Your differentiator
Lead with it, repeat it. Let it inform brand personality.
Who it's for
Target frustrations & attitudes, not ages & genders.
What they get
The feeling every touchpoint should leave behind. The benefit to their lives, not of the product.
Let’s use a well known brand: Go-To skincare.
WHAT IT IS
fun, effective, no bullsh*t skincare, made by an ex-beauty editor who'd tried it all.
WHO IT’S FOR
for those who want a trustworthy shortcut to better skin
WHAT THEY GET
so they can feel confident & in control, without the second-guessing or overwhelm.
